The Quincy Point neighborhood of Quincy borders Weymouth, Braintree and Quincy Center. Quincy Point was home for many decades of the Quincy Shipyard. Quincy Point was home to the shipyard and was a very active yard during World War II. The shipyard opened in 1885 and closed in the late 1980′s. During World War II, the shipyard built more ships than any shipyard in the Country. The shipyard at that time was owned By Bethlehem Steel Corp. who later sold it to General Dynamics.
Early on the Fore River Engine Company, which was the start of the shipyard, was owned by Thomas Watson, who is known as the co-inventor of the telephone with Alexander Graham Bell.
The USS Salem which was built at the shipyard by Bethlehem Steel Corporation back in 1947. This ship is a Heavy Cruiser. This ship was brought back to Quincy in 1994, and is now berthed at the shipyard as a museum.
After several attempts to bring back shipbuilding failed, the yard was sold to a private party. There are plans to build a waterfront community with both housing and retail and commercial space, similar to Marina Bay.
Many of you have probably heard the saying “Kilroy Was Here”. The saying was started by a shipyard worker who began writing it all over the ships. Other shipyard workers followed suit. As the ships traveled throughout the world, so did “Kilroy Was Here”.
